RAIN DIDN'T DAMPEN SPIRITS OR FUN AT AGM/MEADOW HIGHLAND GAMES!
The Virginia Gordons hosted the House of Gordon USA AGM with our usual Ceilidh Corner fun. Rain on Saturday didn't dampen our fun as the Gordon, Donnachaidh and Blue Ribbon Society set up Ceilidh Corner and feasted in style! Jim Gordon of Maryland won the Bonnie Knees Contest, and Gordy won the bonniest kneed tent mascot award! After closing ceremonies mud wrestling and mud sliding contests were held between the Gordon and Blue Ribbon tents! Jerry Vandenberg gave a rousing defense of the Gordon honor. Following that we met down the road at the Kings Dominion Campground for a Ceilidh Dinner featuring Geof Baker's Cock of the North basted stuffed pork loin, Virginia Tech Chicken & sweet potato fries made fresh by David Todd, lots of sides and a whiskey tasting! Music and good conversation was enjoyed by all. The sun came out on Sunday, and the Gordons led the parade of tartans with our own color guard honoring the 5 branches of the Armed Services. Gordy got up to his antics trying to make off with the jack-o- lantern (crafted by our own Allison Baker) and then standing as sentry at the wall of honor. As always the Gordon Grill was in full swing all weekend with Todd's BBQ, ribs, chili, tons of sides, sweets and fun!
Joe "The Flash" Gordon Inducted into the National Hall of Fame in Cooperstown, NY 26 July 2009. Nine-time MLB All Star Joe Gordon went to the World Series six times and was part of the winning team five times. He was voted MVP in 1942 edging out Ted Williams' Triple Crown that year for the honor! He still holds the AL record for number of HR for a 2nd Baseman and is considered one of the all time great defensive players of the game. With 24 years as a manager in MLB during one of the greatest eras of MLB, former Yankees manager Joe McCarthy considered the greatest manager of all time with the highest winning percentage in MLB and seven World Championships said, "The greatest all-around ballplayer I ever saw, and I don't bar any of them, is Joe Gordon." And that says it all! We are so happy to see our kinsman's legacy preserved for future generations.
The House of Gordon Virginia has incorporated a WALL OF HONOR at the Gordon Tent honoring our men and women who have served or are currently serving in one of the branches of the armed services. We also have a web version of the Wall called the HALL of HONOR where you will also find a link to send us your information! USA has followed our lead and also has a Wall of Honor online!
